About Me:
I am a bit quirky; I have been described as a hippie and a tree-hugger but that's not surprising seeing as i live in a fairly conservative small city. (Even our liberals are still pretty conservative.) I buy most of my clothes at Goodwill, partly because I don't have a lot of money to spend on clothes and partly because corporate America leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I don’t believe in extravagance. I love nature. When I go on vacation, I go hiking, camping, and rock-climbing in Eastern Kentucky. I dream of living in a completely self-sufficient community, though I acknowledge that it will probably never happen. Growing most of your own food and making your own clothes takes too much time to be a viable option in today’s society.
I love books and I love to read. The money I save on clothes, I spend on books. Unlike most people I know, I don’t read a book once and then never look at it again. Instead, I revisit my favorite books, slipping between their covers into Anne Shirley’s world at Green Gables, Huck Finn’s life on the Mississippi, Lestat’s seductive endeavors in old world Europe, and so many more.
In addition to being a reader, I’m also a painter. I paint a wide variety of subjects focusing primarily on the abstract and the surreal. I do my painting in a small room in my granddad’s unfinished basement where my best friend, Dylan, and I set up a studio together. Before my friend moved an hour away, we used to spend the majority of our waking hours in that basement talking, laughing, listening to music, and creating things. Now while I paint, since I’m alone, I listen to books on tape from the library. Sometimes they provide inspiration for a new painting, and sometimes they simply keep me company while I am comfortably holed up in my studio with a hot cup of herbal tea and a clean new canvas. Even though I miss Dylan terribly, I love the time I spend alone in my studio with Peter Pan or Inkheart playing quietly on my old CD player so I won’t disturb my granddad.
